Why call it “Camp Yorba Linda”?
Background:
Remember the dot-com boom? and how simple names with a “.com” extension would sell for millions? and how all the one word-dot-com names were taken? This lead to the start of long running joke. If someone said an absurd 2 or 3 word phrase that sounded unusual - someone would say [that phrase]-dot-com and we would check if that domain name was registered. Most of the time, it was registered - and it would be either a pr0n site, a placeholder, or something completely unexpected. Sometimes names like Powered By Steam would be available and an office mate would register it for fun.
Fast forward to summer 2003 when we purchased our home in Yorba Linda:
Bren’s cousin Eric (who is and comes from a long line of high quality tile setters) came over and helped out with some minor repairs around the house. Before I replaced the broken thermostat, the days were muggy and the nights were spent relaxing with family in the pool. It was a camp like environment - and “Camp Yorba Linda” was born. With all the swimming, wading, OK - kicking back in the spa. There was also talk of a 2003 Camp Yorba Linda Swim Team (dot com) - but that didn’t sound quite as clean and simple to remember as CampYorbaLinda.com
Add that with the unfortunate fact that no one can spell “DeArte-dot-com” (my last name) and I like to think of my home as an evil summer camp, you’re sort of stuck with CampYorbaLinda
Hmm, I’ve got to find that swim team logo - that would make a GREAT cafĂ© press t-shirt
